Another round of cut ‘n’ paste repeaters. The film played for three weeks but that’s it as far as the ads are concerned. Feh. Anyhoo … Cinematic Team Jaffe, consisting of father Herb, and sons Robert and Steven-Charles, had already scored a couple of sci-fi hits in the late 1970s with Demon Seed and Time After Time before cashing in on the Stalk ‘n’ Slash box-office phenomenon. The end result of which, Motel Hell, suggests maybe they should have stuck with the other genre. Yeah, not a big fan. But, the pervading black comedy and satirical elements of this culinary enterprise is championed by others but came off kinda dumb to yours truly. (The film’s fault or mine, I leave for you to judge for yourselves.) Team Jaffe would ultimately rebound when switching over to vampires as the decade progressed with Fright Night and Near Dark. And for the record: Fritter — ‘a small mass of fried or sautéed batter often containing fruit or meat.’
