Christian Nyby or Howard Hawks? In the end, I really don’t care who directed our main feature as this sci-fi epic about a Killer Carrot from Outer Space is a whole six-pack of un-ironic awesomeness and my love for it knows no bounds. Nope, no gut-check or toiling or sweating over the answer when posed a query of ‘What’s your favorite movie of all time?’ No ifs, ands or buts, it’s The Thing from Another World. And with that, we have officially finished migrating all the ads over from the old blog. *whew* Fear not, there’s still lots and lots of new stuff to post for your viewing pleasure so stay tuned. And until then, Boils and Ghouls, keep watching the skies!

Originating from Poverty Row, from the cast to execution, When Strangers Marry is about as close to an A picture as the King Brothers or Monogram ever got. A bit of a sleeper hit at the box office, this idiosyncratic film noir drew high praise from Orson Welles, leading to Castle’s eventual collaboration with him on The Lady from Shanghai.
This post is part of Goregirl’s Dungeon and The Last Drive-In’s The William Castle Blogathan, a week long tribute to the King of Schlock. Follow the linkage, Boils & Ghouls. It’s gonna be a great week. And stick around, as we’ll be showcasing Castle’s film career from its fairly normal beginnings through it psychotronic glory days. Stay tuned!

This post is part of my rehash and continuation of the For the Love of Film Noir Blogathon originally held back in February of 2011. Thus and so, we will be heading down the rain-soaked streets and neon-drenched back alleys of Noirville again for the entire month of March. And along with all the old material migrating over from the old site, we’ll also be scattering around a lot of new stuff as well. Also of note, we’ll be posting them in chronological order to show how the genre evolved and progressed from the 1940′s through the late ’50s. And as an added bonus, I’ll be posting some vintage adverts to stuff I’ve always associated with the genre — cigarettes, booze and fashionable ladies.

Apparently, the Road to Ruin is a very slippery slope — as good girl Anne Dixon finds out, the hard way — which quickly rockets you down a path wrought with fast cars, booze and drugs, that ultimately dead-ends with an illegitimate teen pregnancy, and, horror of horrors, an abortion! And a lethally botched one, at that! Written and directed by Dorothy Davenport, a pioneer of sorts in the male dominated studio system, who apparently made it her life’s goal to warn others about the horrors of narcotics after her husband, writer/director Wallace Reid, died of an accidental overdose of morphine.

Abel, Sheldon Leonard, Social Commentary, Ted Donaldson, The Last Crooked Mile, The Return of Rusty, The William Castle Blogathon, William Castle on July 29, 2013 by WB KelsoAs a character, Rusty the dog had a total of eight movie adventures. Here, in the first sequel, Castle gives us a thinly veiled retread of Gus Edson and Irwin Hasen’s Dondi — a popular syndicated comic strip (who has its own tale of cinematic infamy), where our canine hero helps another war orphan, who stowaway-ed his way to the States, in an attempt to find the G.I. who befriended him back in Czechoslovakia. Other directors who handled Rusty’s leash include John Sturges (The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape) and Lew Landers (The Raven, Return of the Vampire).
