From the rustic setting, to the kills, to the killer’s raison d’etre, a person could do a lot worse than the original My Bloody Valentine as far as cinema slashers go. Funded by the profits made off of Columbia for delivering the Scooby-Dooesque slasher, Happy Birthday to Me, the Canadian based Cinepix shot this leaner, meaner and grittier fright flick for Paramount that I think marked the apex of these Canuxploitation body count movies. Possessing some surprising intelligence — when compared to other Stalk ‘n’ Slashers, mind you — the film also has a bit of a mean streak to it, especially in the uncut version (– with nine-minutes of grue patched back in), that I really dig, and thus, places it several notches above its killing kin.
