Another fantastic batch of ads highlighting the work of artist Frank McCarthy, who ranks behind only Reynold Brown in the world of movie poster art as far as I’m concerned. As for the film: beautifully shot, brutal, and rather disturbing when you get right down to it, Jack Cardiff’s Dark of the Sun kinda blind-sided me when I finally caught up with late last year. It’s good, though overly exaggerated recount of the Simba uprising in the Belgian Congo and the efforts to evacuate several personnel and assets from an isolated diamond mine. So brace yourselves, in a The Naked Prey kind of way, before giving it a spin.

The Town that Dreaded Sundown was Texarkana mini-movie mogul Charles B. Pierce’s follow up to his wildly successful crypto-zoological expose, The Legend of Boggy Creek. And cashing in on his own pseudo-documentary template, here, Pierce tells the tale of the Phantom Killer, who murdered five people in the late 1940’s and was never caught. And thanks to some savvy TV-spots and some striking promotional art, the image of the masked killer left a lasting impression on many children of the 1970’s, even though Pierce basically chucked out the facts and fabricated most of the story, including the most unique kill in screen history, helping to usher in the era of found-object killers, when our Phantom takes out a victim with a trombone.
