Stalk ‘n’ SlashCinema :: “Why Haven’t You Checked on the Children…” (December, 1980)

After first catching the sequel, When a Stranger Calls Back, which is pretty terrible, I kinda shied away from the original for the longest time, thinking this fruit was culled from a poisoned tree, before finally taking the plunge. And mea maxima culpa  for waiting so long to catch this morbid and rather ghoulish tale of a baby-sitter surviving an attack by some psychopath only to relive the nightmare several years later when, you guessed it, her attacker escapes from the mental institution and comes a’calling once again. Wow. When a Stranger Calls was originally released in 1979 but the savvy folks at Columbia sent it back out into theaters again in 1980, playing up the Stalk ‘n’ Slash angle, to bring folks in who might’ve missed it the first time.
