I first saw Samuel Fuller’s Run of the Arrow under the alternate title, The Last Bullet, on the late-late show many moons ago. Kind of a nastier, edgier version of Dances with Wolves (that final massacre is just brutal), this was my introduction to both Fuller and Rod Steiger and it needs to be seen by a lot more folks.

After the brutal massacre at Lawrence, Kansas, one of Quantrill’s lead scouts sours on all the killing and flees to the Arizona territories. Alas, old habits are hard to break as he falls in with another bad bunch of stagecoach bandits. But once again, a senseless killing triggers a long dormant conscience, and payback with lead interest has finally come due! Based on John Cunningham’s novel Yankee Gold, this was director Andre de Toth’s 3-D follow up to House of Wax. And this was also only one of about a half-dozen oaters that de Toth made with star Randolph Scott. Now. There were some conflicting reports that The Stranger Wore a Gun was never released in 3-D, but these ads kinda skewer that notion, don’t ya think?

The Stranger Wore a Gun (1953) Scott-Brown Productions :: Columbia Pictures / P: Harry Joe Brown / AP: Randolph Scott / D: André De Toth / W: Kenneth Gamet, John W. Cunningham (novel) / C: Lester White / E: Gene Havlick, James Sweeney / M: Mischa Bakaleinikoff / S: Randolph Scott, Claire Trevor, Joan Weldon, George Macready, Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine

Though The Charge at Feather River isn’t the precise origin of The Wilhelm Scream, it does have the honor of coining the phrase itself. Sort of. What the hell am I talking about? And what’s a Whilhelm Scream, you ask? Well, I’m sure you’ve heard it, we all have, and to find out more you can click on over to the Brewery where I get to the bottom of the most heard unheard of Hollywood cliche. And on top of that, The Charge at Feather River also contains one of my favorite applications of 3-D, when an unarmed Frank Lovejoy’s Sgt. Baker spits several volleys of tobacco juice right into a camera to fend of a deadly rattlesnake. *ptui* Wow.

The Charge at Feather River (1953) Warner Bros. Pictures / P: David Weisbart / D: Gordon Douglas / W: James R. Webb / C: J. Peverell Marley / E: Folmar Blangsted / M: Max Steiner / S: Guy Madison, Vera Miles, Frank Lovejoy, Helen Westcott, Neville Brand

A few years before he started wiring up seats and floated skeletons over audiences, Fort Ti marked director William Castle’s first foray into gimmick film-making and doesn’t cheat the audience, exploiting the stereoscopic process for all it was worth. Though technically a western, I suppose, Castle’s little adventure into the Third Dimension actually takes place during the French and Indian War, where Roger’s Rangers come to the aid of the British outpost at Fort Ticonderoga, currently on the verge of being overrun by said French and Indians. Produced by the notoriously cheap Sam Katzman, I’m surprised folks were given glasses with two lenses instead of one to cut down on costs.

Fort Ti (1953) Esskay Pictures Corporation :: Columbia Pictures / P: Sam Katzman / D: William Castle / W: Robert E. Kent / C: Lester White, Lothrop B. Worth / E: William A. Lyon / M: Ross DiMaggio / S: George Montgomery, Joan Vohs, Irving Bacon, James Seay, Phyllis Fowler

Pardon My Backfire (1953) Columbia Pictures / P: Jules White / D: Jules White / W: Felix Adler / C: Henry Freulich / E: Edwin H. Bryant / S: Moe Howard, Larry Fine, Shemp Howard, Benny Rubin, Frank Sully
